Have They No Shame?

Hi Guys!

It’s time for some more Cellcom bashing! But this time it’s not about politics, fences and soldiers. No, this time it’s about simple creativity.

So, do me a favor and watch this short, new commercial they put out this week.

Pretty cool, huh? Yeah, I like it, too. I’m tellin’ ya, those guys at McCann Erickson are soooo creative. They can do anything when they put their minds to it. But I can’t shake this feeling, it reminds me a bit of something I’ve seen before. Hmmmm… I dunno… maybe… THIS?

(This is an amazing clip of a Japanese band, all the people in are its fans. And the songs is kinda catchy, don’t ya think?)

You ever get that feeling, like you just can’t wait for the next Cellcom ad? What will they think of next?!?

Boker Tov Eliahu! (Well, really Ami),
You have finally discovered that much of Israeli advertising is out and out plagerism.
I know this from way back, even before you were born. I worked for a Tel Aviv advertising agency that had drawers filled with ads ripped out of American newspapers, magazines, (they called them “the archives”) that they blatantly stole for their own applications. NO SHAME!
    Obviously the tradition lives on.

So sad. You would think that guys with budgets like Cellcom would have the money to pay for some creative minds…

Come on, Ami. When was the last time you saw ANYTHING original on Israeli TV? Remember the first season of Kochav Nolad when they claimed that it wasn’t a rip off of Pop Idol / American Idol? What about all the really “original” programming on Channels 2 and 10? Like Survivor, The Amazing Race etc etc. I guess the last decent thing Israel produced was “In Treatment”, and even then I think I’d rather watch Gabriel Byrne than Assi “Wife-Basher” (allegedly) Dayan

Yeah, most Israeli TV ads are very “in your face” ( btw,the Hebrew literal translation of tis phrase is also totally appropriate !. ) Like, who hasn’t noticed how the volume magically increases a few decibels or two when it’s ad time ?
But then occasionally along comes an ad that makes you smile cos’ while it’s probably plagiarised, it’s pretty clever. Am thinking of ad for some financial institution or other where a dim little granny character (cut to focus on her yawning cat) tries to operate her fee-demanding microwave. Wonder if it’s on YouTube?

      Hi Alice,
Two decibels? To me it sounds like hundreds… 🙂
I know the ad you’re talking about, I just can’t remember who did it…

Alice – I think it’s a Bank Egud commercial, and lo and behold – another fraud! Press the link:

So do we call this semi-plagiarism ie. stealing the flog (derogatory Aussie-speak for the “hard sell”) concept while creating a new scenario character ? BTW- as amusing as it is, how really effective is this ad if I can’t identify the product ?

I think it’s fair to call it 100% palgiarism.
And you’re right, I don’t know how it can be effective. But these guys supposedly know what they’re doing, right?
